“It just got a little bit harder to tie the knot in Texas , or more expensive. HB 2685 by Rep. Warren Chisum (R-Pampa) would require every couple to seek state-sanctioned marriage counseling before obtaining a marriage license.”
Ed Cognoski responds:Because the state's role in a marriage is just to give state sanction to a legal contract, requiring the signers of that contract to know something about the legal obligations they are are committing themselves to might be a wise idea.
Maybe the state should extend this, requiring a little legal education before people sign high-interest rate credit card agreements or home mortgages, or other common pitfalls for the common man.
